Our first step was a web search to locate travel agents. We quickly settled on Journeys International after also chatting with them by e-mail. They did a wonderful job making special arrangements when our flights needed to be changed, and even handling an extra unplanned overnight stay in Lima.
They used Amazon Tours, a local operator in the Amazon that operated the ships and employed the tour guides. We enjoyed working with their locally hired staff, who knew the area well. The ship was the M/V Rio Amazons, with an interesting history.
Amazon tours employed Beder Chavez, an accomplished Amazon tour guide, artist, bird watcher, and more! Beder had grown up in the Amazon, and truthfully presented both it's natural properties, and also the impact of the modern day changes.
